The Club registered to be part of the GAA Green Club Programme earlier in the year, to recognise and promote sustainability within the club & wider community.
The first steps in becoming a GAA Green Club was to get approval from the Club Executive and then to establish a "Green Team". The team is currently made up of Susan Clancy, Angie Walsh, Willie Murphy, Ian Doyle, Brian Quirke and Richard Murphy. If anyone is interested in being part of the Green Team, or has any ideas to make our club more sustainable, please contact one of the Team!
Prior to registering for the GAA Green Clubs initiative, we had already undertaken a lot of projects that will naturally feed into the GAA Green Club Programme. Last year we applied for and were approved Community Climate Action funding for four elements to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability in our club and community, namely:
- Replacement of our Arena floodlights with LEDs and connection to the grid to replace the diesel generator
- Solar Panels and batteries for our clubhouse
- Opening a Swap shop and installing shelving
- Bicycle Racks installation
We also recently received 3 Re-turn bins that are currently in place outside the clubhouse, at the arena and over at the dugout on the main pitch. Any proceed from the Re-turns will be used for Coiste na nÓg equipment, initially to fund new juvenile goalposts for the top pitch. Please ensure that only empty, undamaged cans and plastic bottles with a Re-turn Logo are placed in these bins.
We are also planning to introduce waste segregation in the coming weeks to segregate recyclable and compostable material from general waste. Again, we would ask for your co-operation and diligence to ensure waste is properly segregated when the new bins are in place. Signage will be placed adjacent to the bins to inform everyone what materials should be placed in each.
In addition to the many native trees that have been planted over the last few years around the banks bordering the road, we’ve also received native hedging that we intend to plant down the ramp from the clubhouse to the main pitch.
